Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art

OPENED1025 DAYS AGO

A brand new exhibition at the Whitney focused on how artists have disrupted the conventions of cinema has just opened called Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905-2016. The title of the new exhibition refers to science fiction writer, H.P. Lovecraft’s alternate fictional dimension whereby cities, forests, mountains and an underworld can be visited only through dreams.

The exhibition explores how artists have reassembled the conventions of cinema (through screen, projection and darkness) and created new experiences of how we view the moving image. It is the most technologically complex project that has been on show at the Whitney’s new building to date and incorporates a large variety of moving image techniques, from hand-painted film to the latest digital technologies. Using color, touch, music, spectacle, light and darkness, the pieces aim to show how artists can flatten space through animation and abstraction or heighten the illusion of three dimensions.

Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art spans over a century of works by American artists and filmmakers as well as a small number of German cinema and art from the 1920s that has been strongly influenced by American art and film. The spaces in Dreamlands connect different historical moments of cinematic experimentation which, together, create a story that unfolds across a series of immersive spaces. You can expect to see installations, 3-D environments, sculptures, performance and paintings filling the Museum’s 18,000-square-foot fifth-floor galleries and there is also a film series in the third floor theater.

The exhibition is running until February 2017.
