Dez

OPENED200 DAYS AGO

New York’s highly anticipated restaurant Dez finally arrives in Nolita.

Brought to you by celebrity chef Eden Grinshpan – currently the host of Top Chef Canada – together with Samantha Wasser – co-founder of fast-growing vegan destination By Chloe and Italian spot The Sosta – Dez is a fast-casual restaurant with Middle Eastern cuisine. While Wasser is certainly not new to the fast-casual restaurant world, Dez is the first restaurant for chef Grinshpan.

Dez - Main Dining Room

The Spot:

With Wasser behind the restaurant’s branding and design, expect no less than a trendy interior with colorful accents. Taking inspiration from Middle Eastern markets and Moroccan gardens, Dez is fitted with vintage rugs and colorful tiled niches, balancing the warm wooden furnishings and white walls. As you step inside the desert-like oasis – hence the name Dez – make sure your Instagram is ready for the bright neon-signs and equally colorful dishes…

Dez - Beet Meze and Vegetable Salad

The Food:

Inspired by her family roots and travels in the Middle East, Grinshpan has created a menu with contemporary Middle Eastern cuisine, together with E2 Hospitality Culinary Director Cliff Crooks. Think vegetable mezes with honey roasted carrots or cardamom beets; pitas filled with falafel cauliflower and a classic sabich salad. On the weekends, Dez serves an inventive brunch menu with options such as halva toast, honey rose pancake with pistachio and rose syrup, and yogurt with tahini granola.

The Drinks:

DEZ offers coffee by Devocion; matcha and herbal teas by LA hit Leaves and Flowers, as well as craft beers and wines.

The Damage:

Dishes vary between $3 and $11, drinks are around $3-$8.

In a Nutshell:

With a vegetable-focused menu offering many healthy vegetarian and vegan options – not to mention its playful picture-worthy design – Dez is everything we had hoped it would be. While the competition is tough – especially in this area with popular Middle Eastern spot Taïm just a stone’s throw away – this city will never get tired of hummus bowls and pita sandwiches.
