The Dessert Bar at Patisserie Chanson

OPENED14 DAYS AGO

Patisserie Chanson opened its door last spring to the sweet-toothed of Manhattan with huge success. In the pipeline, there has always been plans to develop the lower level of the space into a tasting room for desserts and cocktails and now, it’s finally here! There are many spots in New York for the sweet-obsessed like the recently opened Becky’s Bites or Sweets by CHLOE. but we’re missing a serious dessert spot. One for grown ups. One that grown ups can pair their sumptuous desserts with grown-up drinks like craft cocktails and luxurious Champagne. Thankfully, pastry chef Rory Macdonald has opened such a space – The Dessert Bar at Patisserie Chanson.

The Spot:

Swan through the ground floor of Patisserie Chanson, past the array of confection like delicate macarons, caramels and chocolate and down to the lower level where you’ll find the dedicated dessert bar. The space feels much more like a secret, hidden drinking den than an opulent dessert bar with its dark wood finishes and low lighting (it turns out this spot used to be a speakeasy). Much of the seating is centred around the bar with a few smart sofas to the side to relax on.

The Food:

There’s serious attention to detail from Macdonald – the ex-pastry chef of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant inside the London Hotel where he earned two Michelin stars. There’s a six-course dessert tasting, which includes some savory items, like olive oil gelato with sea salt and eucalyptus to clear the palate between courses. There’s also items like the PB&J – a light peanut butter parfait, sprayed with chocolate, garnished with caramelized crunchy peanuts, freeze dried raspberries, banana and passion fruit, served in a vintage peanut butter jar (to bring back the nostalgia of eating it out of the jar as a kid).

The Drinks:

Cocktails here are of equal importance and feature inventive concoctions like the ‘Poker Alice’ made with home made lipstick, Clear Creek pear eau de vie, blanche Armagnac, yellow Chartreuse, Benedictine and bitters. ‘The Duffield’ comes served hot with Hanger One vodka, Cocchi Americano, house blend botanicals and dragonwell tea.

The Damage:

The six-course tasting menu is $68. An extra $52 for cocktail pairing.

In A Nutshell:

This underground spot has come just in time for the fall and has the perfect recipe to end the perfect night – dessert and alcohol.
