Da Dong

OPENED729 DAYS AGO

Da Dong is a very popular restaurant that has locations in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing and they take their ducks very seriously. Sure, you’re pretty spoiled for choice when it comes to Chinese eats in this wondrous city. Just take a stroll through Chinatown and you’re sure to stumble across a sumptuous offering like Hwa Yuan Szechuan, Tang Hotpot or hotspot, Chinese Tuxedo. But, Da Dong is different. Going through 1.4 million ducks a year collectively from their restaurant chain, Da Dong is arguably Peking duck’s biggest ambassador.

The Spot:

Located near Bryant Park, Da Dong is a sprawling 17,500-square-foot space, complete with 440 spots, including 200 outdoors in their garden terraces (for when its warmer again). There are plenty of booths and long banquettes and the space has a fine dining air about it with high ceilings, impressive light fixtures and long curtains that reveal sweeping city views.

The Food:

So, down to the duck. Let’s start with the fact that this place comes highly recommended with their China-based restaurants attracting the likes of the Obamas, Ferran Adrià and Heston Blumenthal. The ducks are overseen from start to finish – from raising to slaughtering to cooking and, even to how the meat is sliced at the guests’ tables. The recipe has been painstakingly perfected over the course of decades and resulted in a duck that’s perfectly moist with crispy skin. They also serve it up with fancy garnishes like caviar.

Of course they don’t just do duck here. They’ve taken their food and added influences from other countries throughout the world and will be sure to showcase a take on Chinese food that’s never before been seen in the city. Items like Ibérico ham wrapped around sticky rice like sushi, slow-cooked lobster with saffron rice, and layered pancakes with parmigiana for example.

The Drinks:

There’s an equally substantial wine menu complete with over 300 varieties on offer and cocktails like the Monkey Kings (scotch, lemon, honey, grapefruit oil).

In A Nutshell:

Peking duck is food for sharing (they say) and for feasting on. The huge space that also houses a few private rooms for parties mean this spot is going to be a great place for group nights and will offer a great scene. With their attention to detail you can also rest assured that it will be dependable in its quality too. A definite must-visit. And, if you can’t get a reservation (they’re pretty booked up already) they’re also open late night with a limited menu from 11pm-2am.
