Claro

OPENED84 DAYS AGO

There’s a new ‘farm-to-table’ Mexican restaurant that has hit the Brooklyn town of Gowanus and it is worth the journey – Claro. Owner T.J. Steele (who was previously working as an executive sous-chef at Union Square Cafe) is the brains behind the idea and it is an homage to the foods and people of Oaxaca – where he still lives part-time. Gowanus has had a tremendous resurgence of top foodie openings in the last year, not to mention the opening of Freek’s Mill a little over a year ago – the owner of which is also the designer and co-owns Claro too.

The Spot:

Claro goes back to the owners roots and remains authentic in the entire execution of the restaurant, from the space to the menu. There are many personal touches from the thought that goes into making the tortillas (made from an heirloom corn imported from Mexico and cooked in house) to the mezcal found behind the bar – El Buho mezcal – a brand that Steele founded after one of his trips to Oaxaca in 2006.

The Food:

As a chef who grew up in an Italian-American family in New Jersey, Steele has drawn parallels from his dining experiences and upbringing and brought them into the same processes to make the Mexican cuisine served at Claro. Items like memelas and quesadillas are similar to moulding the different shapes of pasta and how making fresh queso is similar to pulling mozzarella.

Expect to find items like salmon ceviche and lobster tostadas to start, followed by wild mushroom quesadilla or heritage pork rib memela.

The Drinks:

Unsurprisingly, mezcal and tequila feature heavily on the cocktail menu while wines and beers can also be found.

In A Nutshell:

The attention to detail and drawing of experiences from both a love of Italian and Mexican cuisine, make this new Gowanus restaurant a spot that’s set to be a hit.
