Chinese Tuxedo

OPENED1111 DAYS AGO

A new spot in Chinatown takes its name from the area’s first ever fine dining restaurant – Chinese Tuxedo. Whilst Chinatown is already home to some awesome spots for a good night out – Pulqueria right next door for example and the most recent opening of Lalo – but, Chinese Tuxedo is aiming to set the bar high with their new opening. Housed within a former opera house on Doyers Street, this new spot, owned by restaurateurs Eddy Buckingham (former owner of Liberty NYC and apparently Justin Timberlake’s personal mixologist) and Jeff Lam, is set to be a new hotspot for this part of town offering a reimagined menu of traditional and classic Chinese dishes from its atmospheric, bi-level space.

They have recruited chef, Paul Donnelly (who previously worked alongside acclaimed chef, Dan Hong at Ms G’s in Sydney) to head up the menu which offers a menu of food that owners Buckingham (who was born in Singapore and raised in Australia) and Lam (who is Chinese American) both grew up eating. The menu at Chinese Tuxedo is full of traditional flavors of the cuisine – all made with a contemporary twist. Decadent snacks like steak tartare with fish fragrant dressing, sichuan and rice crackers kick of the menu before leaning into small plates and salads like their signature Tuxedo dumplings, a vegan dumpling option and ‘Spicy Smashed Cucumbers’. A large portion of the menu dedicated to seafood and meats offers some old favorites like a honey-glazed char siu or sweet and sour pork cheek as well as rice and noodle dishes. The drinks portion of the menu is headed up by owner, Buckingham, who was a former mixologist and has curated a list of inventive cocktails made with low-ABV Chinese spirits alongside a wine list and selection of Chinese and American craft beers.

The space, located on Doyers Street in Chinatown, was once the headquarters for Chinatown’s notorious tong gang wars in the early 1900’s and has been carefully restored by Lam and Buckingham who have managed to retain much of the building’s original details including the pillars and the stripped-down walls. Chinese Tuxedo‘s dining room is complete with banquettes and marble tables.
