Camperdown Elm

OPENED151 DAYS AGO

The long-anticipated opening of the new restaurant named after a famous elm tree in Prospect Park has just opened in South Slope – Camperdown Elm. The opening brings an exciting offering to this part of Brooklyn with a Michelin-starred approach to its menu – without the Michelin-starred pricing.

The Spot:

The chef behind the new opening is Brad Willits (former sous chef at Claus Meyers’ Agern as well as stints at both, Lupulo and Aldea) who will be bringing is fine-dining experience to the menu without making it “too technical”. The restaurant takes the former space of Dale Talde’s Thistle Hill Tavern which closed towards the end of last year.

The Food:

Guests can expect to snack on unique items like squid crackers with mackerel path or grilled cucumber topped with Ikura and smoked buttermilk. Starters include sweetbreads with broccoli mayo, razor clams with fennel or charred sardines with avocado cucumber and dill. Larger dishes include an arctic char with a potato salad and mustard seeds. The emphasis on the menu is on the small plates, encouraging customers to share.

The Damage:

As mentioned, the menu here takes a Michelin-starred approach to its dishes but without the price tag to match. Expect to pay anywhere from $4 – $16 for small dishes and between $21 and $27 for larger dishes.

In A Nutshell:

Willits has created a simple and comfortable neighborhood restaurant with Camperdown Elm. He flawlessly incorporates all of the elements of a Michelin-starred restaurant’s menu without any of the stuffiness or cost typically associated with that type of dining in this city.
