Butcher & Banker

OPENED28 DAYS AGO

A steakhouse has just opened inside a former bank vault that hasn’t been open to the public in nearly 40 years in Hell’s Kitchen – Butcher & Banker. The restaurant is inside the New Yorker Hotel and comes hot off the heels of other hit openings in the area including 70s-themed Bar Gonzo and Gloria.

The Spot:

You’d be forgiven for doing your best gangster impression when you arrive in the space that is a huge nod to the New York Hotel’s Art Deco past. There’s an enormous circular door that swings open into an additional dining area – the walls of which are lined with safe deposit boxes. After the original bank closed in 1980, this vault was used for storage. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, diners can see the vault for the first time in 37 years – with original safe deposit boxes left intact.

The Food:

The kitchen is run by chef, Scott Campbell (an alum of Le Cirque, Windows on the World and the original Union Square Café). As you’d expect in a space like this, the menu is heavily meat-focused with dishes like a massive Kan-Kan pork chop, a Tomahawk ribsteak and cowboy bone-in ribeye. Other rich and decadent dishes include seared foie gras served alongside grilled pineapple and a long-bone short rib that his been smoked on-site in their own smoker.

The Drinks:

Butcher & Banker have enlisted the help of consulting mixologist, Allen Katz, the founder of New York Distilling Company. There’s classics like the Raffles Singapore Sling and a 100 bottle strong wine list, featuring at least 20 bottles that sit under an affordable price tag of less than $50.

The Damage:

Appetizers range from $15-$23 on average with entreés reaching up to $63 for their most prime steaks. On average entreés go for around $30 on average.

In A Nutshell:

Butcher & Banker is a reinvention of the steakhouse – it has all the trappings of the best steakhouses around but offers a little extra theatre without compromising on any of the quality.
