Brooklyn Horror Film Festival

OPENED1042 DAYS AGO

Brooklyn Horror Film Festival is here for the first time in history and it has fans of the genre quivering with excitement. With Halloween just around the corner and the sheer caliber of this weekend’s screenings, we’re getting all giddy with excitement.

The three-day event is playing host to screenings of two worldwide and five U.S. premieres amongst many others. This first world premiere ‘Child Eater’ comes from Icelandic writer-director Erlingur Thoroddsen, a film which became feature length after a successful Kickstarter campaign and the 2012 short (of the same name) making a substantial impact at the SXSW film festival. The second, entitled ‘Psychotic! A Brooklyn Slasher’, comes from the boroughs homegrown talent, director duo Maxwell Frey and Derek Gibbons.

Despite the name, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival goes way beyond the screen too. There’s panel discussions, filmmaker Q&A’s, games, contests, an award ceremony and a sendoff party after the final screening.

Entertainment is presented in a non-digital format as the festival’s ‘Stage Frights’ program gets underway. Browse strange, eerie and horrifying artwork as part of ‘Apparition: A Popup Art Show’ hosted at Catland Books. Head down Syndicated Bar on Bogart Street for ‘Critical Drinking’, an interactive event revolving around trivia questions and debate topics hosted by esteemed horror critics including Peri Nemiroff and Michael Gingold. Or experience live spoken word from author Grady Hendrix whom the WSJ called “a national treasure”.

If sound bites like “a mentally disturbed fashion model who moves into a Brooklyn brownstone that doubles as the Gates of Hell” or “waking up bound to an altar greeted by an elderly Mexican couple with a nightmarish plan” resonate with you then this is an event not to be missed.
