Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams
The Museum of Modern Art introduces a new art exhibition, Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams.
Visionary artist Bodys Isek Kingelez created his work in the time when Zaire – now Democratic Republic of the Congo – became independent from Belgium, reflecting the hopes and dreams he had for his country. The exhibition showcases sculptures of buildings and cities Kingelez envisioned, contrasting his own experiences in Kinshasa – a city that struggled keeping up with its own urban growth.
Using a wide range of materials, the artist’s sculptures are created by everything from colored paper to commercial packaging to plastic and bottle caps, giving everyday products a new life. The first US retrospective of Kingelez’s work spans his full career, featuring humble yet impressive single-building sculptures to entire cities complete with soccer stadiums, banks and restaurants.
The exhibition “Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams” starts on May 26.
