Bocce USQ

OPENED72 DAYS AGO

Italian restaurant Bocce USQ opens in Union Square Park.

Located inside the Union Square Pavilion, Bocce USQ is brought to you by managing partner Jason Leeds with an impressive team of professionals, including former Roberta’s pizza chefs – Tim Meyers and Anthony Falco – and general manager Chris Johnson (formerly of Metta and Union Square Hospitality). New York is seeing a lot of new Italian restaurants lately, including SIMÒ Pizza in the Meatpacking District and Macchina in Gramercy Park North.

The Spot:

Designed in collaboration with Gachot Studios, the iconic pavilion building has been transformed into an Italian-inspired family villa, featuring a large communal table and green shuttered windows. While the space naturally lets in an airy breeze, the outside area is equally as pleasant with plenty of picnic tables and a bocce court – thanks Bocce USQ for giving us the backyard we never had.

The Food:

Helmed by executive chef Tim Meyers – formerly of Charlie Bird and Roberta’s – the menu at Bocce USQ focuses on pizzas and seasonal fare. Inspired by Union Square’s Greenmarket, options include pappardelle with market pesto, a snap pea caesar salad and “The Farm” (a pizza with mozzarella, chilies, green garlic and market greens). With pizza consultant Anthony Falco – former pizza czar at Roberta’s – on board, make sure your table includes at least one pizza.

The Drinks:

Following suit with your food, Bocce USQ offers a menu of Italian wines and spritz. Besides a classic Aperol spritz on tap, there are more inventive options such as the Purple Spritz (made with Zubrowka Vodka, Lillet Blanc, créme yvette, lavender, blackberry, and soda) and the Orchard Sangria, featuring Jamaican rum, peach, apricot and vanilla.

The Damage:

Shareable dishes vary between $12-$21; pizzas cost $16-$20; spritz are $11.

In a Nutshell:

With a menu offering everything from salads to pizza and pasta, Bocce USQ definitely succeeds in being a neighborhood restaurant that pleases us all. Now, let’s not try and get too competitive at a game of bocce.
