Blacktail

OPENED1547 DAYS AGO

Blacktail is a new bar and restaurant that draws on multiple cultural and historical influences — it’s an American bar set in Cuba during the Prohibition era and merges both latin and U.S. flavors. It re-imagines a time when Americans had to travel far in search of cocktails and adventure. Lucky for you, this bar serves up stiff drinks and full-flavored bites right in Manhattan. No plane ticket needed.

Head to this Battery Park City watering hole to sample drinks like Cuban staples, El Presidente, for a fresh spin on the classic (made with rum, mezcal, chile and mole bitters). Or try their daring and herbaceous Button Hook, a colorless cocktail which contains absinthe and looks harmless – until you have your first sip. Another must-try is Blacktail’s version of a rum and coke which contains fernet, champagne and Orinoco bitters. This certainly isn’t your regular soda and liquor combo and you may never be able to return to that version after trying this one.

The food is Latin-inspired and full of fresh flavors. Gulf shrimp are served on sugarcane skewers paired with watermelon for a tropical taste. Blacktail’s Cuban sandwich is surprisingly made with rabbit instead of pork, an unexpected but very successful re-vamp of a Cuban staple. Their ahi tuna crudo with olives, breadcrumbs and incredibly fresh fish make for a great bite too.

Blacktail’s location right on the Hudson river in itself has a transportative quality to it. The venue stands alone away from bars and nightlife making it a trip in itself — it takes you to another era both in décor and drinks. Head here for cocktails and fresh bites if you have a hankering for Prohibition-era Cuba and also if you could use a meticulously-crafted libation.
