Black Seed NoMad

OPENED372 DAYS AGO

New York’s beloved bagel shop Black Seed opens a fourth location in NoMad’s Ace Hotel.

Ever since Matt Kliegman (of The Smile) and Noah Bernamoff (of Mile End Delicatessen) opened their Nolita shop in 2014, the wood-fired bagels have been dominating the city’s bagel scene – despite being strikingly different than the classic New York-style bagel.

The Spot:

Led by executive baker and James Beard “Outstanding Baker” award finalist Dianna Daoheung, Black Seed’s bagels borrow baking techniques from Montreal. Made with a naturally-leavened dough, the bagels are boiled in water with honey, before baking them by hand in a wood-burning oven. The result is a dense, lightly browned bagel that is both crisp and chewy – not to mention addictive. In addition to Nolita, East Village and Brookfield Place, you can now find the city’s iconic rounds of dough inside the Ace Hotel.

The Food:

The menu balances traditional offerings with more adventurous combinations, from smoked salmon with cream cheese to buffalo cauliflower and beet-cured lox. Other must-try options include the Miami Vice (turkey melt with Swiss cheese and dijon mustard), Milk & Honey (ricotta, apple and honey), and The Combo (loaded with meats and pepperoncini peppers). Did we mention the pizza bagels, served open-faced with melted mozzarella and  pepperoni?

The Drinks:

The Damage:

In a Nutshell:

Black Seed has become an institution in New York’s downtown neighborhoods, and it’s about time they brought their Montreal-inspired bagels uptown. If you work in the area, consider this your new go-to spot for breakfast or lunch – or both.
