Ah bacon. That delightfully tasty and satisfying treat that seems to make any hangover slightly more bearable and any meal slightly more exciting. It is with that thought in mind that we find ourselves wondering, why has this never been done before? Belly, is the new restaurant we are referring to, which has just opened in Williamsburg offering NYC’s first ever bacon omakase.

The Spot:

Belly is situated on the corner of Driggs and Grand Avenue and offers a much more casual approach to its offering than typical omakese settings. There’s even a lower level, below the restaurant, that houses a BEATS Karaoke section complete with a 12-room karaoke parlor that’s byob!

The Food:

Of course there is also an a la carte menu available but why would you opt for that when you can have a 9-course bacon omakase?! The experience aims to take diners on a journey through the different cuts, textures and preparations of the beloved pig. It begins, as all bacon tasting menus should begin, with a glass of cold draft beer (there is also sparkling wine available) before moving through various bacon-focused riffs on traditional dishes like bacon carpaccio with truffle oil, Himalayan pink sea salt, bacon sushi torched tableside with wasabi and warming Sichuan oil, a bacon steak and bacon schnitzel among others. Dessert ends the tasting menu in a spectacular fashion with the ‘Hurricane Doughnut’ that is prepared in the traditional Korean shape where dough is twisted together and fried and then glazed in a sweet kimchi icing, sprinkled with chives and sesame seeds, served next to a dollop of secret ‘smoky’ whipped cream redolent of bacon fat.

The Drinks:

The tasting menu includes a wine, beer, soju, or sake pairing. Non-alcoholic options include the must-try housemade cold Korean plum tea, and two flavors of Sac Sac (pulpy Korean fruit punch).

If you’re a serious eater with a bacon-centric palette then Belly is the one for you.
