Basement

OPENED649 DAYS AGO

Three Michelin-starred Chef Masa Takayama has opened Basement, a new kaiseki restaurant beneath Tetsu in TriBeCa.

Kaiseki is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, with a meaning similar to haute cuisine in English. Or, well, French.

The Spot:

The Tetsu building dates back to 1865, and Basement is a warm, softly-lit space, with a 22-foot wooden countertop in the centre, open kitchen and suede seating. It seats 39.

The Food:

Chef Masa has a rotating Omakase-only menu – Omakase is the Japanese tradition of letting the chef choose the food, and Chef Masa will adjust his menus to the preferences of individual guests. It’s all protein-focused, though, including A5 Wagyu beef, whole squab and whole fish. Sides and preparations will vary seasonally, too.

The Drinks:

There’s a BYOB option, and a list of interesting cocktails including the Vodka Pear (vodka, pickled Asian pear, kaffir lime) and the Beet Tegroni (blanco tequila, campari, charred beet). There are also wines, beers and spirits available.

The Damage:

The kaiseki meal is $350 per person – that doesn’t include drinks, and corkage is $95 if you bring your own.

In a Nutshell:

Chef Masa has some impressive travels and a long history in the food industry under his belt, and the launch of Tetsu last year was long-awaited. We’re intrigued by the personalized menu options (and those cocktails) and so we’re pretty sure a lot of visitors to Tetsu will be venturing downstairs.
