Banzarbar

OPENED116 DAYS AGO

Banzarbar, a new cocktail bar with an Antarctic expedition theme, is open now above Freemans in the LES.

Freemans owners  Taavo Somer and William Tigertt named the weekends-only bar after the 1930s British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE – see what they did there?), and there’s a theme of exploration in the menu.

The Spot:

Upstairs at Freemans, the cocktail bar is a warmly lit, intimate space, with lanterns, a curved wooden bar, and some nautical  artwork. It’s quite small – only eighteen seats – and only open Thursday through Saturday, so get in there quick.

The Food:

The cocktail tasting experience comes with a series of small plates, including oysters with chili mignonette and pickled apple, cured Spanish mackerel with squash, and chocolate bonbons from Patisserie Chanson.

Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find more bar snacks, like silver dollar gougères, rice paper wafers and fried chickpeas, as well as larger meals larger plates such as braised pork belly, mushrooms in garlic oil and grilled chicken or octopus. You can also order The Kraken to share: a whole grilled octopus tempura-fried with patatas bravas. Well, you’d do it just for the name, wouldn’t you?

The Drinks:

There’s a focus on low-ABV cocktails here – the cocktail menu is overseen by Eryn Reece, who said they wanted to do something ‘a little different’. This focus means you can happily go for the five-cocktail experience and still find your way out of the restaurant later. Score.

Ingredients like amaro and fortified wines litter the cocktail menu – you’ll find a vermouth & Champagne cocktail in the experience (paired with those oysters), and marsala and cognac to go with the bonbons. On the à la carte menu there are some brilliant nautical names, such as Deception Island (gin, aquavit, verjus, olive leaf and thyme), Sons of Neptune (rum, aquavit, banana, sesame and Angelica root), and the Albatross (Scotch, Irish whisky, Oloroso sherry, black cherry and hazelnut). Cocktails, cocktails everywhere – although you can also get wine, champagne, beer, sake and spirits.

The Damage:

Get the two-hour tasting experience for $95, or à la carte cocktails are $18 each. There’s a huge range of spirits, ranging from about $13 to $70, with fortified wines cheaper at $9–16.

In a Nutshell:

We’re intrigued by the very specific theme here – there’s no shortage of nautical bars in NYC, but these guys have gone for it and we’re interested to see how it pans out. The cocktails seem well-thought-out and carefully designed, and we love the delicate food pairings and the focus on low-ABV. Plus, anywhere you get to say ‘I’ll have Deception Island, please’ sounds like a fun night out to us.
