Air’s Champagne Parlor

OPENED85 DAYS AGO

Do you ever have champagne dreams, where you’re being feted by flutes upon flutes of that sweet, sweet blonde nectar? Well, it’s real now, and it’s called Air’s Champagne Parlor. This slice of Parisian life in the center of New York serves up – literally – dozens of varieties of Champagne and other sparkling wine. (In case you’re unfamiliar, Champagne is actually a controlled designation, and only a minor subset of all sparkling wine produced worldwide.)

The Spot:

One block south of Washington Square Park amid the hubbub of New York University, Air’s Champagne Parlor looks pretty much like what we’d expect a champagne parlor to look like: elegant, sophisticated, cozy and exclusive. That last point notwithstanding, the marble-floored room has space for 40 bubbly aficionados.

The décor is somewhat of a cross between modern and Gilded Age; the wrought-iron marble tables are balanced by a line of clean, airy bar stools that line the contemporary bar. This dissonance aside, the room is large enough to not be claustrophobic, yet small enough to feel intimate.

The Food:

While the focus here is most definitely on the alcohol, that’s not to say that food has been ignored; on the contrary, the menu is designed to complement sparkling wine and bring out its strengths as an accompanying drink. Raw and cooked seafood is prevalent, including oysters, hamachi tartare and Indian-inspired garam masala scallops. And, of course, there’s cheese – served by the piece or prepared in a warm, flaky pastry. Three varieties of caviar – trout, grinnell and American sturgeon, written in order of increasing quality – are available to enjoy by the half ounce.

The Drinks:

The real star is the Champagne and sparkling wines, of which Air’s Champagne Parlor offers an eye-popping 125 varieties of all shapes, sizes and flavors. The bubbly flows fast and easy here, much like life in the city: the bar offers 50 bottles under $50. A selection of cocktails, still wines and beer round out the beverage menu.

The Damage:

Drink prices were not available at press time, but the food will run you anywhere from $8 to $20 – with an outlier being the seafood platter, a daily selection of raw and cooked seafood, offered for $60. Cheese is market price.

In A Nutshell:

If your favorite kind of wine is bubbly, then you need to visit Air’s Champagne Parlor – full stop. Their drink menu reads like a sparkling wine-lover’s Christmas list, except this time, Santa delivers.
