99 Bank

OPENED964 DAYS AGO

A new restaurant has just opened in the West Village and offers an entirely gluten-free menu – 99 Bank. Owned by Frank Baldassare who was diagnosed with Celiac disease back in 2002, the new spot was born out of the idea to provide a tasty and healthy alternative for those that suffer with the various health issues that come with consuming gluten.

While this isn’t the first type of gluten-free spot to come to Manhattan – in fact, we’ve had a few recent gluten-free openings that have landed in the city, like Pretty Southern – this is one of the very few that makes you feel like you’re still having a ‘normal’ meal.

Baldassare is also pretty well known for his own cooking show called “The Missing Ingredient” focused around a gluten-free diet and drew the attention of stars like Martha Stewart and started to spread even further in popularity. The decision to open a restaurant quickly followed and Baldassare found his chef at the Client Center of Goldman Sachs, Nima Khansari, who was executive chef there. Khansari has spent the last 4 years perfecting the gluten-free art of cooking and, when you try the menu at 99 Bank, you’ll see that his hard work has paid off.

Seemingly unobtainable dishes like a stone-fired mozzarella, tomato and basil pizza and a burger with caramelized onion served on a sesame bun served with hand-cut fries are all available. Other dishes like a grass-fed NY strip and Pemaquid mussels are also available. 99 Bank also features a grain-free spirits offering that includes vodka made from beet sugar and potato in addition to a list of ciders and wines from around the world.

This neighborhood spot, located on Bank and the corner of Greenwich Street, is light and refreshing to enter. The design is minimal with eclectic touches and offers diners a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle (and gluten) of the streets of Manhattan.
