Tavo

OPENED133 DAYS AGO

There are sweet plantain dumplings on the menu at new West Village spot, Tavo – need you any other reason to go? If you’re still unsure, then let’s read on for more reasons.

Head to the West Village and you won’t be short of Mexican restaurants to satisfy your appetite and one of the owners behind this new spot is to thank for that. Julieta Ballesteros also runs hot Mexi-spot, La Loteria in the same area as well as Los Feliz down in the Lower East Side. Ballesteros has partnered with a native of Monterrey, Mexico, Francisco Decrescenzo for the new spot (she is also from that same part of the world) to offer up a menu of Mexican food that is inspired by global influences they have discovered on their travels.

The menu at Tavo is described as Asian/Latin and aims to blend Latin American and Japanese flavors in addition to a few unique dishes inspired by the pairs’ travels. Highlights include the Peking duck carnitas (that come marinated in a citrus-teriyaki sauce and served in maguey leaves), chow fun noodles (with corn and shrimp) and Cuban lasagne with adobo pulled pork.

Of course, there are also those sweet plantain dumplings that feature on the dessert menu in addition to a green tea flan and a chocolate lava cake. The cocktails offer an equally imaginative selection of fusions like The Black Widow (with Bourbon maple syrup, activated charcoal and Meyer lemon) and the La Fiera (with vodka, agave and cilantro).

Tavo gets its name (short for Gustavo) from one of Decrescenzo’s grandfathers. The modern space features a sleek copper top bar as well as a huge topographic map mural of the owners’ hometown of Monterrey, Mexico. The dark wood floors paired with the low lighting make this the perfect spot for a cozy dinner to explore an imaginative menu.
