MexiKosher

OPENED1050 DAYS AGO

MexiKosher is just what it sounds like — a new Upper Manhattan restaurant serving kosher Mexican food.

Two words you don’t often hear together — Mexican and kosher. However, that’s the concept behind Chef Katsuji Tanabe’s fast-casual restaurant concept, MexiKosher, which initially launched in Los Angeles but just opened in New York’s Upper West Side.

If you’re into televised cooking competitions, Tanabe’s face might be familiar — he’s a ‘Top Chef’ and ‘Chopped’ alum. After working in LA’s top kosher steakhouse, Shilo’s, he decided to pay homage to his Mexican roots with a completely kosher kitchen.

You can start your meal at MexiKosher with some pre-dinner bites — hot wings, taquitos and chimichangas are the perfect way to whet your palate. The wings are hot, crunchy and served with a little chipotle spice.

For your next step you have quite a few options; you can get a burrito, salad, tacos or nachos. It’s not an easy decision to make, but what might be more difficult to narrow down are all the delicious meat options. Their birria is six hour-braised lamb and beef in mixed dried chillies. The grilled steak is marinated in fresh herbs and garlic. The carne asada is a beef and duck confit that has been braised for 18 hours. Lastly, their chicken breast is charbroiled and marinated in secret Mayan spices with a citrus aroma.

Everything is served with fresh vegetables, delicious yellow rice and salsa. Make sure to sample all of the fantastic sauces that are available at MexiKosher — we especially loved the spicy mango habanero and smoky chipotle sauces, which added depth of flavor and kick to our main dishes.

MexiKosher is very popular, so don’t be surprised if you see a line forming outside. The hype is justified — the place has great flavors, fresh veggies and scrumptious meats that make for the perfect lunch or dinner.

Other recently opened Mexican restaurants around NYC include Ziggy’s and Lalo.
