Loring Place

OPENED251 DAYS AGO

Native son Dan Kluger has opened his first solo restaurant, Loring Place, in Greenwich Village. Most recently, he was Executive Chef of ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina. Kluger was nominated for the 2014 James Beard Award for Best Chef NYC.

While Greenwich Village has welcomed some great new spots in this part of the city – most recently, The Anthony and Yves – Loring Place has a chef with some serious experience behind it. He worked for the city’s big name restaurateurs: Danny Meyer, Tom Colicchio, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten. With that pedigree, it’s not surprising that his place pays intense attention to detail, hospitality, and features market-driven food with unexpected flavors.

The name itself is a tribute to his father, who grew up on the street in the Morris Heights neighborhood in the Bronx. Housed in a building from 1848, architect Craig Shillito from Cycle Architecture + Planning used wood, steel, and concrete front and center. NY City Slab repurposed original pine beams into tables. The interior and furnishings are inviting, yet minimal and modern. Even the aprons are bespoke, a collaboration with menswear designer Todd Synder.

With both a wood-burning grill and oven, much of the vegetable-focused menu at Loring Place is cooked over open flame. Sharing plates include wood grilled broccoli with orange, kohlrabi, and pistachio-mint dressing or pizzas made from home-milled flour and seasonal ingredients.

But it’s not all vegetables. The cheeseburger is a centerpiece, crafted with Niman Ranch short rib, brisket, and chuck ground in-house, topped with housemade bacon, Duroc pork belly, Cato Corner vivace cheese, and aioli on a Bien Cuit pain au lait bun. Desserts are classic American and comforting, such as monkey bread, a “blizzard,” and a chocolate “Hostess cupcake” filled with orange crème fraiche.

The beverage program at Loring Place is led by Ann Marie Del Bello and Natalie Johnson. They include signature and classic cocktails, artisanal beers, local ciders, and wines from classic regions and small grower-producers on the menu. The Stable, named for the carriage houses and stables in the neighborhood, uses Bimini Gin from Round Turn Distilling, matcha, and Red Jacket Orchard’s fuji apple juice.
